Real winter and a surreal World

The real winter finally arrived and made the outdooring pleasant again! Ken and Kaarna walk by the steaming river to the town center. Since the river never freezes there are always ducks.

But now Kaarna sees something else:

- Shit! What weirdos are those?!

Ken is also amazed and says:

- I think they look like great cormorants… But they shouldn’t live here, because they are seabirds. Maybe I’m wrong!

It takes an hour to walk to the super markets. When the temperature is close to -20°C Ken refuses to torture his van by starting the engine and only driving about 5 minutes back and forth.

- We are so lucky that we live in Melukylä, and can take the scenic route to the town center, Ken rejoices.

Kaarna agrees. It would be horrible to walk in the middle of depressive block buildings and loud traffic.

Ken's phone beeps.
- Oh, I just received a message about the pottery class. It starts next week! I had completely forgotten that I signed for it! Every Thursday evening.

- I'll write it down on the calendar, Kaarna says helpfully.

- What’s in the news today?

- The same as every day: trump trump trump trump trump. Mr. ”You didn’t give me the Nobel price, I’ll take Greenland then” Trump. The Big World is led by bullies and our own leaders kiss their asses. In case they’re not too busy torturing the poor people of our own country. What’s wrong with everyone these days?

- It’s just people being people. You and me happened to born during the short time period when the Western Europe was determined to take care of the weak ones too. It’s all gone. It’s the survival of the fittest now. Like it had been for centuries until the end of the World War II. This is the human normality. We have no hope, don’t you see?

One evening when Kaarna comes to the bedroom, she sees Ken fingering something knitted.

- Is that a prayer square?! You’re not even religious! What the hell, Ken?!

- I think the thought behind these prayer squares is beautiful. And I feel that it can’t do any harm to try to find some peace of mind this way. Nothing else seems to help…

- Oh jesus fuc… oops, do I now have to hold my tongue from now on?

The idea of a prayer square came from England and was ”launched” in Finland by @annakaisahautala and @kirsimaritta.

The knitted square can be touched and held and kept in a pocket for example, as a reminder of prayer and grace.

Anyone can knit them by themselves and give them as gifts. They are not meant to be sold. If your dolls want to receive a prayer square, please contact @kirsimaritta

In the next morning Ken has woken up early and made an insane mess in the kitchen.

- I’m renovating! Someone at the village Fb group announced that they’re giving away some kitchen cabinets!

Kaarna sighs:

- Can I blame the prayer square for this or is the spring getting close already?

- Blame? Try thanking instead! Oh, and take some yoghurt for breakfast… you can’t cook porridge, since the stove is not plugged in… we need to call an electrician…

After a manic day Ken has completed half of the kitchen. The recycled top cabinets are on the wall and Ken has built a corner shelf from scratches.

But now what? A side table is needed, but Ken has no more energy.

He builds only a simple side table, and when it’s done he wants to celebrate the new kitchen!

Maybe by baking a delicious chocolate cake!

He should know better though… baking with shaky and tired hands after sawing and hammering is never a good idea.

- Well, a sandwich is just as good, he decides.
